How old is the Solar System?

Allende CAI2 sideways

The image above is from the Allende CV3 meteorite. The white irregularly-shaped object is about 1 cm long and is known as a calcium aluminium-rich inclusion or CAI for short. CAIs turn out to be the oldest solar system objects so far dated. The ages obtained on CAIs in fact define the age of our solar system. The oldest reliable date obtained so far on CAIs is 4,567 million years!
